This is the second of two acoustic Sunday afternoon gigs at this year’s Oxford Folk Festival. Both are new venues for us. Common Ground Cafe is a bit scruffy but very comfortable with sofas and armchairs. There’s tea, coffee, snacks and, if 4:15 on a Sunday isn’t too early for you, booze too!
Admission is free but there will be lots of collecting buckets and card readers around so please make a contribution to the festival’s running expenses.
This is the first of two acoustic Sunday afternoon gigs at this year’s Oxford Folk Festival. Both are new venues for us. Modern Art Oxford looks like a very classy gallery. Not sure whether we’ll be in the middle of the exhibition or in a space of our own.

I lost my bank card one day last May. I either left it in a shop or dropped it in the car park. By the time I realised, I was 100 miles away and the shop had shut, so I rang the bank and cancelled the card. No harm was done, but I was cross with myself.
A few years ago, a mole burrowed under my back lawn, throwing up a couple of dirt mounds. I stamped them down and waited to see whether they’d be rebuilt, but they never were. I suppose the soil was too much like hard work for the amount of food available.
Max the bass concertina, built by Colin & Rosalie Dipper
A tune to honour the wonderful Dipper family of Heytesbury, Wilts; musicians, instrument makers and all-round good eggs.
(Sept ’25) Turns out that this is not an original tune. It has a very close resemblance to Da Slockit Light by Shetland fiddler Tom Anderson (1910-91), which I didn’t know I knew. The original is a lovely tune and I hope that my misremembered refashioning of it as a hornpipe is not too dreadful.
Music for a summer evening, featuring The Pop-up Choir and The Strollers in the first half, then Three Pressed Men and Songer’s Copse after the interval – when the usually closed ffennel memorial gardens behind the church will be open to the audience.
Admission is free, donations welcome. Refreshments on sale from the concert bar, all proceeds towards the festival charities.
No parking beside the church. Please use the car park behind the (closed) White Hart pub. See the festival website for more information about the week-long festival and the church’s web-site for a map and directions
You wait ages for a Three Pressed Men gig and then 2 come along together! We will be making 2 appearances on Sunday 21st April 2024 as part of this year’s Oxford Folk Festival

12:30 pm “Three In One” Concert, St Aldate’s Tavern
Ian Giles / Mat Green & Andy Turner / Three Pressed Men
An informal lunchtime concert in “The Blue Room” upstairs at The St Aldate’s Tavern, just across the road from Oxford Town Hall.
All three acts have been delighting audiences in Oxfordshire and beyond, for more years than anyone cares to remember, with their interpretations of traditional music and contemporary music that continues old traditions. Each will perform 2 sets during the afternoon. There will be lots for the audience to join in with.
Admission is FREE. There will be a collection, to cover our costs, principally the room hire. Suggested donation £5 each,
If you buy food or drink at the bar, please mention to the staff that you are in the concert upstairs. They will deduct the price of your order from the bill we have to pay at the end of the afternoon. You won’t be charged any extra.
John Kirkpatrick should have played at Cholsey Pavilion back in 2019 but wasn’t well enough on that occasion so Three Pressed Men stepped in and played a full set rather than just the planned support spot. Restored to full health, John is back in Cholsey this spring and Three Pressed Men are honoured to offer a warm-up set.
Tickets are just £10 in advance from concerts@cholsey.com or 01491 652295, or £12 at the door, though they’ve been selling well and are expected to sell out in advance. If you want to go, best get in touch with the organisers soon.
