Profile of S15 E828

Built by the Southern Railway in 1927 under Maunsell, but essentially to Urie’s design for the LSWR, S15 4-6-0 locomotive no 828 spent her life pulling anything and everything all over the Southern system, from pick-goods to express freight to summer specials for the holidaymakers. Rescued from the scrapyard by the Eastleigh Railway Preservation Society, she was restored to full health, and spent the 1990s pulling mainline excursions and working on the Swanage Railway. This programme covers some of those railtours, and a summer day on the Swanage Railway.

THREE PRESSED MEN
Plain English
Steam Age Records steam005-2

You get four men and six concertinas for the price of three here; explanation given in the informative notes to their second CD. It includes nine songs as well as some original, imported and Morris tunes, while the intro. to The White Hare of Howden is worthy of the Animals (I always said it was a Geordie song) and the Pressed Men’s version has a deliberately bluesy feel, including alto sax. An immediate contrast is Lavenders Blue (are we having an Owen Brannigan revival?), but well done lads, for the concertina and with many more words than appear in the Northumbrian Minstrelsy.

Dick Wolff Solo Project, Fri 7th Sept 2012

Dick Wolff says:

“The Moonrakers, who host a regular (but I don’t know how frequent) acoustic evening at the Red Lion, Wolvercote, have invited me to do an extended set tomorrow night to promote the album ‘Green & Gold’ I released in July and which has been reviewed (favourably, I understand) in Shire Folk this month. Since the album is heavily multitracked and therefore can’t be reproduced live I’ve got my two Three Pressed Men colleagues Mark Fry and Ian Wheeler to help me out.

Starts at 8:30, tomorrow Friday.

Info about the album, with samples, on my web-site.

‘twould be good to see you.”

Wolvercote is on the north-west edge of Oxford. Location map for The Red Lion

Traction Dance – 8th Sept. 2012

The Recreation Ground, Berrick Salome
at 7:30pm
Caller: Ian Giles

Location map

This has become a regular booking for Traction in recent years. It takes place in a marquee. The band’s stage is a farm trailer. There’s a bar, usually with a couple of real ales and a good cider available.
